Across the water

The Phoenix Hall at Byōdō-in, Uji, reflected in the pond

Across the pond, the Phoenix Hall appears to rest on the water. The reflection brings the building into the foreground while the shore keeps it at a distance.

The hall at Byōdō-in was built in 1053 and faces east. Viewed across the pond, its placement invites an imagined view toward Amida’s Western Pure Land. Architecture, water and the position of the visitor work together to make an idea visible.

The photograph holds that relationship rather than treating the building as an isolated monument. Between this bank and the hall, the pond becomes a space for thought. Its physical distance is small enough to see across, yet the scene gives it another scale.
