A visit to Kiyomizu-dera begins before the wider grounds come into view. The Niōmon gate and nearby bell tower mark the approach with strong lines and vermilion colour.
In the photograph, the structures give arrival its own scale. Their roofs and openings pull attention in different directions, while the route ahead remains only partly visible.
It is easy to think of an entrance as a passage to the important view beyond. Here I wanted to stay with the beginning. The first buildings already shape how the visitor moves, looks up and understands the space ahead.
