The city after dark

The city after dark — Kyoto · 京都

After dark, the lane gathers light in separate places. Lanterns mark entrances; signs sit above the narrow passage; a walk can change direction with each doorway.

This photograph is from Kyoto. Lantern light gives the narrow passage depth, drawing attention to each entrance along the way.

What interests me is the distance between one entrance and the next. A street view might hurry toward a destination, but this one keeps several possible stops open. The small pools of light give the passage its rhythm without resolving where the walk will end.
