The garden between the branches

A maple branch holds the sharpest detail in this view of Tenryū-ji. Its red and orange leaves stretch diagonally across the frame, suspended between the darker trunks and the soft shapes of the garden behind them.

The temple building appears along the left edge, its white walls and roof partly obscured by the trees. Moss covers the ground below, connecting the separate trunks through a continuous field of green. These quieter surfaces give the small leaves room to stand out.

The photograph follows a difference in focus as much as a difference in colour. The branch is close enough to study leaf by leaf; the rest of the garden remains present as depth, texture and light.
